Tigers defender parks contract talks, young Docker closing in on new deal

Richmond defender Daniel Rioli has parked contract talks with the club.

Rioli, who comes out of contract at the end of the season, told AFL.com.au this week that he’s not speaking to the Tigers about a new deal.

The forward-turned-defender is averaging career-best numbers in disposals (19.9), marks (5.3), inside 50s (2.9) and rebounds (3.3) this year.

AFL Media reporter Cal Twomey recently told SEN Breakfast that the triple-premiership Tiger was in no rush to open contract talks.

“He’s parked contract talks. We spoke a little while ago about Rioli being in no rush to open things,” Twomey told SEN Breakfast.

“He chatted with my colleague Sarah Olle at AFL.com.au this week about that - he’s parked talks at Richmond for the moment. That’s definitely one club to keep an eye on.

“He said there’s nothing happening with his deal at this stage. He only did a one-year deal last year. I think that’s going to be an interesting one at the back end of this year.”

Meanwhile, emerging Fremantle defender Hayden Young is closing in on a four-year contract extension, reports Twomey.

“This is looming as a big result for the Dockers,” he said.

“Hayden Young, he’s contracted already until the end of 2023, but the Dockers have moved quickly to lock him in.

“He’s closing in on a four-year extension. That would essentially tie him to Fremantle for the next five seasons, including next year, until the end of 2027 when he would become a free agent.”

Young, 21, has played 20 games after being selected by the Dockers with pick No.7 in the 2019 National Draft.
