Dons grab first win as axed Saint Billings responds in Sunday VFL action

VFL fans were treated on Sunday with six games across the afternoon.

The day’s first game took place at Windy Hill with Essendon taking on Coburg and it was the Dons who picked up their first win of the season by one point.

Many notable AFL Bombers were competing in the clash, with Tom Cutler the pick of the bunch with 33 disposals and a goal.

The wingman was well supported by Nick Bryan (14 disposals, 47 hitouts), James Stewart (21 disposals), Kaine Baldwin (three goals) and Aaron Francis (two goals).

Over at Avalon Airport Oval, Werribee took care of an in-form Collingwood side by a comfortable 55 points.

For the home side, Kyle Declase continued to impress with 26 disposals and 11 marks, increasing his hopes of being picked up in the mid-season draft.

For the Magpies, Caleb Poulter put his hand up for senior selection with 26 disposals alongside Fin Macrae who had 25 touches of his own.

Aiden Begg (17 disposals, 18 hitouts) and Reef McInnes (two goals, 14 disposals) were also notable performers.

Following Saturday’s AFL win, Geelong cruised to another easy win at the state level against GWS at GMHBA Stadium.

Luke Dahlhaus was one Cat who was strong in the win, with the veteran picking up 25 disposals and kicking two goals.

Ruckman Toby Conway was also impressive, with the big man collecting 20 disposals to go with 16 hitouts.

For the Giants, Ryan Angwin (17 disposals) and Cameron Fleeton (17 disposals) fought hard in defeat.

Over at Preston, it was former Carlton affiliate Northern Bullants taking on the Blues' reserves.

Carlton ended victors by nine points, with Will Setterfield (23 disposals), Tom Williamson (one goal, 22 disposals) and Sam Philp (three goals, 18 disposals) notable performers.

At Frankston, Casey kept their unbeaten start to their VFL campaign going with an 18-point win over the Dolphins.

Mitch Brown continued his strong goalkicking form with two majors, while potential Steven May replacement Adam Tomlinson was again everywhere with 28 disposals and eight marks of his own.

To wrap up the round, Sandringham hosted North Melbourne at Trevor Barker Beach Oval after the Saints and Kangaroos met at AFL level.

In the end, Sandringham finished 34 points ahead of the Roos as several senior Saints imposed themselves on the contest.

Jack Billings responded well to his AFL axing with one goal and 24 disposals, while Dan Butler (five goals, 23 disposals), Tom Campbell (one goal, 23 disposals, 51 hitouts) and Jarryn Geary (one goal, 21 disposals) impressed.

For the Roos, Jaidyn Stephenson found plenty of football with 23 disposals but was limited to just seven kicks.

Matt McGuinness (25 disposals) and Atu Bosenavulagi (19 disposals) were also decent in defeat.
