“He’s had a few phone calls”: Clubs approach ex-Giants coach Cameron

2022-06-08T11:28+10:00

AFL clubs are showing interest in former GWS coach Leon Cameron.

Cameron has revealed his manager, Craig Kelly, has received a “few phone calls” about a possible return to clubland.

The 49-year-old resigned as Giants coach in May after nine years in the role.

SEN Breakfast co-host Garry Lyon asked: “Have you had an approach from a club?”

Cameron replied: “Craig Kelly, who’s been looking after me for my whole footy career basically, he’s had a few phone calls.

“But I said, ‘Look, in fairness to the footy clubs, let’s get to the end of June, maybe start of July, and then see where my head is at’.

“Am I enjoying time out of the game? Do I want a full year and not just a half a year? And then crack in and make a decision in early July, I reckon.”

Cameron outlined what the next step in his career could be.

“Realistically, there’s one of three things that you’ll end up doing,” he said.

“That is jumping straight back into clubland for 2023 as an assistant coach, a footy manager or a senior coach.

“Or 2024, have a bit of time off for a year and a half and work through some areas that you really want to work on in terms of some study or some areas that you think you can improve as a person to then jump back into AFL footy.

“Or just have a rest completely. I’ve been going hard for 34 years and I’m going to use the next two or three weeks to work out what’s the next step.

“It’s sort of unknown, there’s no script. A lot of good people have said take your time.

“But as I explained to you earlier, you get a bit itchy and sometimes you want to make your decision, so you have a direction and structure.”

Cameron coached the Giants to a maiden Grand Final appearance in 2019.
