WATCH | Is Ginnivan teaching Magpies teammate tackling technique?

2022-06-09T15:10+10:00

Collingwood forward Jack Ginnivan has been filmed practising some tackling techniques with defender Jack Madgen at training.

It poses the question - Is the young Magpie teaching his fellow teammate the art of drawing a high free kick?

Or perhaps Ginnivan is merely showing his teammate how he should tackle young forwards who adopt a similar technique.

Ginnivan, who has been accused of exaggerating contact to draw free kicks this year, was seen exercising the technique with Madgen.

The young Magpie was in the thick of the action in Sunday’s four-point win over Hawthorn, receiving two free kicks in the first quarter that led directly to goals - triggering a public outcry towards Ginnivan.

In the wake of Sunday’s clash, former coach Nathan Buckley went into bat for Ginnivan, saying there’s a “skill” to the way players take on tackles.

“I like the players that test the boundaries. I was trying to find different examples — Tom Hawkins and the way he approaches a forward 50 ruck contest. I reckon he’s borderline giving free kicks away every time the way he uses his body,” Buckley said on SEN Breakfast.

“He does that in aerial contests as well, so you can say that he’s on the edge of the rules with the way that he uses his strength.

“So if you use your size or if you use your gile or if you use your smarts to be on the edge of the rules, I don’t have an issue with that.

“It’s a hard game to umpire and we have an emotional reaction. If Jack Ginnivan drops his shoulders or lifts his arm — as Joel Selwood has done his whole career — and gets a high free kick, and your defender has given that free kick away, you’ve got an emotional reaction to it.

“So I think we find that we get drawn into that. But that’s the game.”
