What changes do NSW have to make in do-or-die Origin II?

2022-06-09T12:20+10:00

Queensland great Cameron Smith has questioned the selection of Stephen Crichton at number 14 for the Blues in their Origin I loss and has suggested that NSW make a switch to a genuine utility.

Jack Wighton was controversially picked as starting centre over Crichton, but after a phenomenal performance in Game I, the Raider may have secured his spot for the remainder of the series.

As an out and out centre, Smith believes selecting Crichton at 14 was a mistake and that NSW coach Brad Fittler should instead go with Nicho Hynes on the bench.

“What happens with Stephen Crichton?” Smith asked on SEN 1170 The Captain’s Run.

“He sat on the bench for the most part of that game.

“Because Jack Wighton was playing so well and there was no reason to take him, they were left with the dilemma of how to use Stephen Crichton.

“(Fittler) will have a look at Nicho Hynes to play that utility role.

“It’s such an important role.

“It’ll be interesting to see how they go for Game II.”

It was evident that the Blues were dearly missing last series’ two best players in Tom Trbojevic and Latrell Mitchell with the latter being floated as an outside chance to be selected for Game II.

Smith holds concern over the fitness of Mitchell given his injury and recent COVID diagnosis.

If the Rabbitoh were to return in Perth he would be entering the game’s biggest stage with a lack of match fitness.

“He’s coming off a huge layoff with his hamstring injury,” Smith said.

“I don’t think they’ll risk it.

“I don’t think he’ll be ready for Game II.

“NSW are 1-0 down…it’s not panic stations, but you are desperate.”

State of Origin moves west to Perth as Queensland will look to wrap up the series on June 26.
