All-Australian selector heaps praise on Richmond star

2022-06-14T17:42+10:00

All-Australian selector Gerard Healy has heaped praise on Nick Vlastuin’s 2022 season so far.

The Richmond premiership defender was named in the All-Australian squad of 40 in 2020 – his one and only nomination – but didn’t make the final 22.

Vlastuin, a three-time premiership player, has been a key cog in Richmond’s defence for several seasons alongside co-captain Dylan Grimes.

Healy is surprised Vlastuin hasn’t received more recognition from All-Australian selectors in previous years.

The 28-year-old has been restricted to just 18 games over the past two seasons - 12 last year and six so far in 2022 - due to knee and hamstring injuries.

“Since Round 5, he’s the second-best intercept marker in the competition. He’s number six for marks,” Healy told Sportsday.

“He is so good in that department.

“I’m surprised they haven’t pushed him up for All-Australian.”

The Brownlow Medallist is backing the Tigers to overcome Carlton at the MCG on Thursday night.

“I said on Friday night that I’d be tipping the Tigers,” Healy said.

“I think the Blues are too injured in the defensive area.

“If (Tom) Lynch is in, I just think they’re too good around the ball. They’re also fantastic at the intercept and they’re really quick.

“I think they’ve got a shade more depth, the Tigers, and I’d be surprised if they don’t win.”

The Blues (9-3) beat the Tigers (7-5) by 25 points back in Round 1.
