How much Hawks great would pay Franklin in 2023

Sydney veteran Lance Franklin is worth a new contract for 2023 worth up to $500,000, according to Hawthorn great Dermott Brereton.

The 35-year-old forward’s mega nine-year, $10 million deal he signed in 2013 expires at the end of this season.

The Age reports the Swans are willing to offer Franklin a new contract worth around $400,000 for next year.

Franklin became just the sixth player in the VFL/AFL history to kick 1000 career goals against Geelong in Round 2.

The four-time Coleman Medallist has booted a team-high 30 goals in 12 games so far in 2022 after registering 51 majors last season.

“He’s going to have more of these average games and he’s still going to have the games that click for him,” Brereton told SEN’s The Run Home.

“Knowing how that landscape works, it has morphed and it has changed in a couple of decades, but you do need a bit of showbiz to capture the market.

“I would say because he can still win a match, he might be able to win you four matches off his own boot.

“You’re still probably going to have to pay him half a million.

“He’s going to have the PR component as well.”

Franklin battled injury in 2019 and 2020, playing just 10 games across those two years.

The eight-time All-Australian has made 30 appearances since the start of 2021.

Franklin has kicked 1025 goals in 330 games for Hawthorn and Sydney across a decorated 18-season career.
