The top 5 players Cummings would go to war with

2022-06-24T09:35+10:00

Scott Cummings has named the top 5 teammates he would go to war with.

The 1999 Coleman Medallist played a total of 128 AFL games with four clubs spanning nine seasons.

During his time with Essendon, Port Adelaide, West Coast and Collingwood, he played alongside some of the game’s toughest and most tenacious.

But these players also have qualities off the field that Cummings admires and have made them people he would happily stand next to at battle if of course it came to that.

These are guys that the former full-forward played with at the Eagles, Power and the Bombers.

Cummings’ Top 5 players he would go to war with:

5. Brayden Lyle
(West Coast and Port Adelaide)

“He was just one of the ultimate teammates, he was there for everyone else.

“He worked his backside off all the time for you. He’d do anything for you, on or off the field.

“Absolutely loved Brayden Lyle.”

4. Drew Banfield
(West Coast)

“He’s the warhorse.

“265 games for the Eagles and not one of them did he give less than 100 per cent.

“Again, just there for his teammates. Honest and rock solid.”

3. Mark Harvey
(Essendon)

“He played 206 games for Essendon, 97 times he coached Freo (and three games at Brisbane).

“Three premierships, two All-Australians, a best and fairest, leading goal kicker too people forget.

“He was one of the toughest going around. He is one of the all-time toughest blokes you would play footy with.

“Off-field you want him right next to you.”

2. Chris Mainwaring
(West Coast)

“I still miss him every day.

“A bloke who was there whenever I needed him, I’m talking on-field or off-field, chats and advice.

“201 games for the Eagles and we know how good he was.

“Absolutely love him, still miss him, and I would go to war for his wife and kids whenever they need.”

1. Fraser Gehrig
(West Coast and St Kilda)

“Big ‘Frase’, 260 games, 549 goals, two Colemans, he had a phenomenal career.

“If you’re in any strife in any way, shape or form, you want the big man standing right next to you.

“It doesn’t matter what’s going on, if someone’s done the wrong thing by you, he’ll be right there beside you.

“The most generous and loyal human being you’ll ever meet in your life.”
