Bulldogs’ “poor match-up” questioned after Lions star sizzles

2022-07-01T07:56+10:00

Brisbane star Charlie Cameron was too hot to handle for the Western Bulldogs on Thursday night.

Cameron was in sizzling form, kicking four goals to go with five goal assists in the Lions’ 41-point win at the Gabba.

Kane Cornes declared Cameron’s game the best he has seen from a small forward this year.

The 27-year-old has kicked 35 goals in 2022 – the most of any small forward in the competition.

“I’m not sure I’ve seen a better game from a small forward this year than what Charlie Cameron delivered,” Cornes told SEN Breakfast.

“He was the number one ranked player on the ground, which is tough to do as a small forward, he had 12 touches, he kicked four and had five direct assists.

“So nine of his 12 touches resulted in a goal.”

David King thinks Anthony Scott was the wrong match-up for Cameron.

Cameron’s speed troubled the Bulldogs mature-age recruit, especially in the third quarter, as the Lions ran away with the match.

“I thought it was a poor match-up to be honest,” King said.

“I thought Scott was a really poor match-up.”

Cornes asked: “So what else could they have done?

“Because (Taylor) Duryea was out. (Ed) Richards was out.”

King replied: “Jason Johannisen has played a lot of football down back. Johannisen’s been a Norm Smith Medallist across half-back.

“Is he a lock down defender? Probably not.

“But can you go to him for one special effort given that he’s a mature, senior player and ask for a performance?”

The Lions improved to 11-4, while the Dogs dropped out of the top eight.
