Australia is back in control of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle, leading by 101 runs after Day 2.
The day’s play saw the Aussies bat from go to whoa following a delayed start due to wet and wild weather.
From 5/157 when opener Usman Khawaja was dismissed for 71, Cameron Green produced a finely crafted 77 with assistance from Travis Head (45) to steady the ship and guide Andrew McDonald’s side back on course.
It was Green’s fourth Test half-century, improving his average to 36.41 and attracting words of praise from former Australian keeper-batsman Brad Haddin.
“We’re witnessing something special here with Cameron Green,” Haddin said on commentary.
“Every Test innings he’s getting better and better. He understands what it takes to build an innings.
“It’s a very, very classy knock from Cameron Green.”
Australia would finish the day at 8/313 with captain Pat Cummins (26) and Nathan Lyon (8) both not out.
For Sri Lanka, off-spinner Ramesh Mendis was the pick of the bowlers, taking 4/107 from 31 overs.
Day 3 will commence with the tourists holding a handy lead with two wickets remaining in their opening dig.
