“Coach in waiting” Burgess to decide between Souths or Dolphins apprenticeship

Rugby league great Sam Burgess is said to be an NRL coach in waiting, but where will he complete his apprenticeship as an assistant?

That’s the question facing the former South Sydney forward with both the Rabbitohs and Dolphins keen on acquiring his services.

While Burgess is said to be excited about the opportunity to learn under Bennett, The Sydney Morning Herald’s Adrian Proszenko says his relationship with Russell Crowe could see him return to South Sydney.

“He’s also got an affection for Russell Crowe as well (as Bennett),” Proszenko said on SEN 1170 Afternoons.

“He’s doing work for his Orara Valley Axeman, Crowe of course is one of the backers of that club and South Sydney.

“It has been a bit of a drawn-out saga and it’ll probably come to a head very soon, he’s set to meet with Souths officials over the next couple of days to determine where he wants to coach.”

While Burgess’ future is in his own hands, Proszenko believes a potential coaching partnership with his ex-teammate John Sutton could see Burgess join him as a co-coach of the Rabbitohs’ SG Ball squad.

“A guy that I had a chat with recently was John Sutton,” Proszenko said.

“John Sutton and Sam Burgess are great mates and former teammates, and they almost made a pact to coach together at SG Nall level.

“Talking to John he might have a word in the ear of his great mate to hopefully put an end to the speculation about his future.

“He’s seen as an NRL coach in waiting, it’s just whether he wants to finish his apprenticeship under Wayne Bennett or with his beloved Souths.

“We’ll know in the next few days.”

Burgess has previously spoken of his desire to become a head coach of an NRL club.

On top of his commitments with Orara Valley, Burgess has been spotted at New South Wales’ Origin camp as he oversaw the Blues’ Game I preparation.
