Essendon set to “ask the question” again of star Dogs midfielder

2022-06-30T19:37+10:00

Attention is now turning to Josh Dunkley’s future at the Western Bulldogs, according to AFL Media’s Callum Twomey.

The Dogs have had success in re-signing several of their stars in recent weeks, with the likes of Caleb Daniel, Tim English and Bailey Dale all inking long-term deals.

While Twomey reports that important defender Alex Keath has played enough games this season to trigger a deal for next year, Josh Dunkley’s future remains a subject of great intrigue.

Dunkley, who knocked back Essendon at the end of the 2020 season to remain at Whitten Oval, is still unsigned beyond this year and Twomey said he expected the Bombers to ask the question again.

“(Alex Keath’s contract for 2023) is done,” he said on SEN Breakfast.

“He’s hit a trigger, so he’ll play on next year for the club which will be his fourth season at the Dogs. He’s finally hit that trigger for 2023.

“The attention now is squarely on Josh Dunkley at the Bulldogs, who is out of contract and has an offer there to take up but he’s put that decision off but it’s reaching the time where he needs to make a call pretty soon.

“I’m sure the Bombers will ask the question again, but other clubs will be watching that closely.

“So far the Dogs have been able to tick off all their priorities and Josh Dunkley is now the next one.”

Dunkley has played every game for the Western Bulldogs this year, averaging 25 disposals and six marks.
