Hodge impressed by “composed” and “mature” Brisbane defender

Luke Hodge was full of praise for Brisbane following the big win over the Western Bulldogs on Thursday night.

The Lions ran out 41-point winners at the Gabba, piling on 10 second-half goals and restricting the visitors to just four majors after the main break.

Former Lion Hodge singled out one individual who impressed him in the win.

Keidean Coleman picked up 24 disposals, took 10 marks and had five rebound 50s, while showing his prowess in turning defence into attack with nine score involvements, five inside 50s and a goal assist.

“I didn’t mind the game of ‘Kiddy’ Coleman on the half-back line,” he said on SENQ’s Pat & Heals.

“Very composed and very mature game from him.

“When you’ve got the touch and calmness that he has, you want to get him the ball as much as possible. I just thought it was a great game.”

It was arguably the best game from the 22-year-old this season.

The main area where Chris Fagan’s Lions improved was in defence, conceding just nine goals, which was a stark contrast to the Round 15 loss to Melbourne when they gave up 16 goals and 37 scoring shots.

Hodge enjoyed what key defender Harris Andrews did against the Dogs while praising Marcus Adams for the role he played on dangerous forward Aaron Naughton.

“Harris Andrews was excellent down back. Their whole defence was really stable,” he added.

“I think that’s the part they’ve had a few issues with the last few weeks with Darcy Gardiner going out at times.

“It was a big job on Naughton for Marcus, and Naughton’s a very good forward so he got his opportunities at times.

“But it was something that I think the coaches would be happy with, how stable the backline was.

“That was Lions football at it’s best last night.”

The victory saw the Lions return to second position on the ladder with an 11-4 win-loss record and a healthy percentage of 126.9.

They next meet Essendon in Round 17 before taking on GWS in Round 18 and then the highly-anticipated Q-Clash with Gold Coast in Round 19.
