The “forgotten man in footy” who needs to find a new club

2022-07-01T09:32+10:00

Fremantle’s Connor Blakely is yet to make a senior appearance so far this season.

The 26-year-old was delisted and then re-rookied along with Mitch Crowden to give the Dockers greater flexibility at last year’s draft.

Blakely, who signed a three-year contract extension in 2019, hasn’t played at AFL level since Round 22 last season.

Fremantle’s rise up the ladder and their improved squad depth has meant players like Blakely have struggled to break into Justin Longmuir’s side.

Brownlow Medallist Gerard Healy says Blakely needs to explore a move away from the Dockers at season’s end.

The out-of-favour midfielder is averaging 27 disposals per game in the WAFL this year.

“What about the forgotten man in footy?” Healy told Sportsday.

“He (Blakely) needs to go to another club next year.”

Nathan Wilson is another fringe Docker who has found senior opportunities hard to come by.

Wilson, 28, hasn’t made an AFL appearance this season such is Fremantle’s strength in depth.

“Two years ago, he was one of the best running half-backs in the game,” Healy said.

“They’ve got good depth in their squad.”

Wilson, who is stuck on 149 games, signed a one-year contract extension for 2022 last September.
