Bridge linked with shock Chiefs move following Crusaders’ title win

2022-07-01T10:49+10:00

Whispers are circling that champion utility back George Bridge is set to depart the Crusaders franchise.

Bridge has made 67 appearances for the Christchurch-based club and has tasted six years of victory under the guidance of coach Scott Robertson.

However, a lack of game time in recent seasons due to injury and competition from other impressive backs has left the 27-year-old in the dark.

The lack of game time left Bridge with just three starting appearances in 17 matches across the 2022 Super Rugby Pacific season and may have contributed to his potential move elsewhere.

Former All Black Stephen Donald discussed the whispers on SENZ’s The Run Home, alluding that a shift to the Chiefs may be on the cards for the 19-Test All Black.

“Word on the street is Bridge might be leaving the Crusaders to very much get more game time,” Donald said.

“(The inside word is he will be moving) to the Chiefs … it would make sense for me.

“It would be a good move for George Bridge for me.”

Should the rumours be true, Bridge would likely slot into the Chiefs’ wing following the departure of Jonah Lowe and Chase Tiatia earlier in June.

However, Bridge would still have to compete with electric winger Shaun Stevenson and returning fullback Damian McKenzie to gain the increased game time he desires.
