Blues face two “tough” list calls, midfielder’s future in doubt

2022-07-07T09:24+10:00

Carlton pair Caleb Marchbank and David Cuningham are both coming out of contract at season’s end.

Marchbank and Cuningham have been struck down by injury throughout their time at the Blues.

In his first AFL game in nearly three years last month, Marchbank suffered a lateral meniscus tear in his knee that will sideline him for up to eight weeks.

Cuningham has also missed a chunk of football, playing just 41 games into his sixth season at Ikon Park.

The 25-year-old hasn’t appeared at senior level since May last year due to a knee injury.

“The tough ones will be on Caleb Marchbank and David Cuningham,” AFL Media reporter Cal Twomey told SEN Breakfast.

“Riley (Beveridge) reports on AFL.com.au today that the Blues are keen to retain both players and will make those assessments a little closer to the end of the year before they enter contract negotiations.

“Both have been so injury hit.

“We know Marchbank’s story, in his first game in about three years he got injured again and Cuningham hasn’t played since May last year.”

Twomey also gave the latest on Paddy Dow’s future at Carlton.

The 22-year-old midfielder is contracted for 2023, but isn’t certain to be at the Blues next year.

“He is, I think, one that clubs would definitely be looking at because he’s probably a bargain-basement player for other clubs to come and pick off,” Twomey said.

“He’s not getting midfield opportunities at the Blues, and I think that clubs will take a look at him.

“I expect him to be on the trade market this year.”

Dow has made just two AFL appearances this season, one of them as an unused sub.

Carlton has some big names coming out of contract next year including Harry McKay, Charlie Curnow and Tom De Koning.
