King and Cornes' trade thoughts on Taranto, Jackson and Lobb

2022-07-08T08:20+10:00

Kane Cornes and David King have given their thoughts on three big names set to headline the upcoming trade period in Tim Taranto, Luke Jackson and Rory Lobb.

Speaking on SEN Breakfast, the pair discussed what Taranto would be worth in a trade, whether the Dockers need Jackson and Lobb reportedly wanting out of Fremantle once again.

Tim Taranto

Cornes: “He appears to be gettable from the Giants and has reportedly four Melbourne clubs chasing him in Richmond, Geelong, Essendon and Collingwood. How do you see him and what club would like to get him?”

King: “I think Richmond is the number one seed. What would you have to pay to get him? You probably have to pay a first-round pick and maybe a little steak-knife third round selection.”

Cornes: “Taking it back to when Dion Prestia left the Gold Coast, at that stage of his career, I think it was a pick six for him, would that be around the figure for Tim Taranto?”

King: “I think Prestia was a better package as an absolute clearance beast. Taranto has the ability to play forward as that hybrid marking midfield forward … he’s that sort of player. I don’t know if he is the absolutely midfielder Prestia is. If you were GWS, what would you take? What would be the bare minimum you’d take? Would you take a late first rounder?”

Cornes: “I don’t think I’m the best at valuing players … I think he would be around pick 12, that’s just my gut feel, but GWS probably want more. Is Adam Cerra a better player than Taranto with what he’s done in the game? Probably not. Dylan Shiel went for two first-round picks. It’s just a matter of the leverage you’ve got.”

Luke Jackson

Cornes: “The biggest one on the market right now, Fremantle, according to Jon Ralph, is extremely confident they’re going to land Luke Jackson. This would be one of the biggest trades we’ve seen in recent times. Does he fit in at Fremantle? Jackson comes in, perhaps Rory Lobb comes out. It’s a big risk for Fremantle to go down this path with how good they’re playing.”

King: “Where’s the risk?”

Cornes: “Well, he’s not a goalkicker. If you’re saying that Jackson comes in and Lobb comes out, Lobb’s kicked 27 goals for the year, Jackson has kicked 23 goals in his career. What is that forward structure going to look like with Luke Jackson there playing 70 per cent of the game forward with Sean Darcy there? That’s the risk. That you disrupt a pretty good forward mix, not that they’re stars. Matt Taberner and Lobb surrounded by the smalls. Lobb goes out, Jackson comes in, I don’t know how it sits.”

King: “I think their forward mix is a mess. We’re talking about Nat Fyfe playing forward because they need another marking option. I don’t know if their forward mix is why they’re going to have success. This kid is going to be a star, so you do whatever you can to improve your football club. He’s 20 as a ruckman. We saw what he did in the Grand Final last year. He was unbelievable. Do you pay overs? Absolutely. Do you give him a longer contract than most? Absolutely. You just get the job done. You don’t get a look at a player of this quality very often.”

King: “What does it do to Sean Darcy is the bigger point and what the mix is.”

Cornes: “Because Darcy can’t play anywhere else.”

King: “Do you need Sean Darcy? Do you look at moving Sean Darcy on?”

Cornes: “Well that’s a different take.”

Rory Lobb

Cornes: “Just on Rory Lobb, he might be tipped out if Jackson comes in. I don’t know why he’d leave. He wanted to get out last year. He’s finally playing the football that he is capable of at 29, he’s having a career-best year, Champion Data has him ranked as the fourth best key forward in the competition this year and now he wants to go to the Bulldogs? It was GWS last year and now he's not happy, even though he’s playing career-best footy in a team that could win the premiership and now he wants to go to the Dogs? I don’t get it. I’m not sure the advice is sound if that’s the advice he’s gotten.”

King: “Maybe he wants some security. He wants a long-term deal and to get that he’s going to have to leave. It’s a fair upgrade to go from Lobb to Jackson in my opinion. If the gap is $150,000 a year for the next five years, I’m doing that every day of the week.”
