Riewoldt responds to Cooney’s North Melbourne suggestion

Richmond’s Jack Riewoldt has responded to a suggestion from Adam Cooney that perhaps he could continue his career at North Melbourne.

The 2008 Brownlow Medallist floated the idea on SEN earlier this week, saying if the Tigers opted against offering Riewoldt a contract for 2023 then he would be a good fit for the struggling Kangaroos.

Having read Cooney’s contemplations, Riewoldt laughed off the suggestion, however, did acknowledge that “you never want to say no” to such ideas.

“Our friend Adam Cooney, who works at SEN, he was the one who proposed this,” Riewoldt said on SEN Tassie.

“I know he’s got a boxing fight coming up, and I’m not 100 per cent sure if that’s still going ahead, because Adam might have copped a knock to the head beforehand when he’s rolled this one out.

“It’s an interesting one because you never want to say no to these sort of things because when you come to the end of your career… I have an idea in my head what my pathway looks like out of football, when that is I’m not 100 per cent sure.

“But you never want to say no because someone could come and say something from left field and say, ‘Hey, have you ever thought about doing this?’.

“Because I’ve got an idea what I want to do, maybe I haven’t thought about everything in my life post football.

“There’s been a lot of commentary around it this week.”

Tigers vice-captain Riewoldt, who has kicked 27 goals this season, is out of contract this year and is yet to make a definitive call on whether or not he will play on next season.

The 33-year-old and Richmond are next in action against Gold Coast at Metricon Stadium this Saturday evening.

The Tigers sit seventh on the ladder with a 9-6 win-loss record.
