Matthews takes aim at North Melbourne president’s “silly comment”

Leigh Matthews has taken aim at a “silly comment” made by North Melbourne president Sonja Hood.

Hood and CEO Ben Amarfio fronted media on Tuesday to announce that the Kangaroos had parted ways with senior coach David Noble.

During the press conference, Hood declared the Roos have a “really great playing list”.

“I’m not interested in wholesale change,” she told reporters.

“We’ve got a really great playing list, really great playing list.

“A lot of talent on our list and a lot of talent among our people.”

The Kangaroos have lost 14 straight games to languish at the bottom of the ladder with a dreadful 1-15 win-loss record.

Noble was relieved of his coaching duties after winning just five of 38 games at the helm.

Speaking on Sportsday, Matthews rubbished Hood’s assessment of North’s list.

“That’s a silly comment, isn’t it?” the VFL/AFL legend said.

“I don’t think anyone in their right mind can think that North Melbourne’s playing list is really great.

“The most you can say is promising, in other words, we’ve got a lot of youth that’s unproven and it’s promising.

“Really great is not a term anyone else would use about North Melbourne’s playing list.

“It’s only words, but they’re words that have no fabric, do they?

“You could not possibly think they’ve got a really great playing list.”

It appears likely North Melbourne will apply for a priority pick from the AFL at season’s end.
