North Melbourne has approached AFL over priority pick

2022-07-12T12:17+10:00

North Melbourne has spoken to the AFL about acquiring a priority pick at season’s end.

Kangaroos CEO Ben Amarfio has confirmed the club will aggressively pursue more talent – including a priority draft selection.

North’s list has undergone drastic turnover as part of an extensive rebuild, which saw 11 players delisted at the end of 2020.

Experienced trio Ben Brown (Melbourne), Shaun Higgins (Geelong) and Robbie Tarrant (Richmond) were also traded in that time.

The Roos parted company with senior coach David Noble on Tuesday after 14 consecutive losses.

“We’ve got some unbelievably exciting young talent,” Amarfio told reporters at a press conference on Tuesday.

“Do we need more talent? Absolutely.

“Are we going to be aggressive in acquiring more talent? Yes, we will. We’ll have a real crack.

“We’ll go to the AFL - and we’ve already started informal conversations about mechanisms to bring more talent into the club through priority picks and such.

“The system of the AFL is all about ups and downs. You go down the bottom, you take your licks, you get more talent, and you rise again.

“The teams at the top of the table at the moment have all had their time at the bottom of the ladder as well.

“This is just a moment in time.”

Noble was relieved of his coaching duties having won just five of 38 games in charge.

The Roos selected Jason Horne-Francis with the No.1 pick in last year’s National Draft.

They also nabbed first-round picks Will Phillips (pick 3) and Tom Powell (pick 13) in 2020.
