Tigers forward receives support after “unfair” flak

2022-07-13T06:53+10:00

Richmond youngster Hugo Ralphsmith has thrown his support behind teammate Jason Castagna.

Castagna had the chance extend the Tigers’ advantage against Gold Coast on Saturday, only to have his kick smothered as he closed in on goal.

At the time, Richmond led by 17 points with less than six minutes left in the final quarter.

Castagna’s touched behind was the visitors’ last score of the match as the Suns kicked three late goals to seal a remarkable two-point after-the-siren win.

Ralphsmith, the Rising Star nominee for Round 17, says the forward’s mistake wasn’t the sole reason the Tigers lost the match.

“I think it definitely is a bit unfair (the criticism),” Ralphsmith told SEN Afternoons.

“There wasn’t just one moment that would’ve iced the game.

“‘Jase’ is a really tough dude. He doesn’t look into that quite as much, and neither do we.

“We back him as a player, and we back his ability.

“You play it over in your head a little bit, there’s moments in a game that I’ve played over in my head that I wish I did a little bit differently.

“That moment, I don’t think, defined the game.”

The Tigers blew a 40-point lead to fall to their seventh defeat of the season and as a result dropped to eighth position, only sitting inside the eight on percentage.
