Collingwood champion backed to break AFL record

2022-07-15T07:28+10:00

Could Collingwood captain Scott Pendlebury break the record for the most games played in VFL/AFL history?

Ahead of his 350th game this weekend, David King has backed the 34-year-old to surpass Brent Harvey’s all-time games record.

Harvey played 432 matches across 21 seasons for North Melbourne.

Pendlebury requires another 83 games to break the record, meaning he would have to play for another four years.

“I think he’s the man to break ‘Boomer’ Harvey’s record at the moment,” King told SEN’s The Picks.

“He’s playing great football and I think off half-back he’ll survive down there.

“He’ll know when to hold them, know when to fold them style, look after the body.”

The man himself says he will keep playing, as long as he feels he’s contributing to the team’s cause.

Pendlebury is the games record holder at the Magpies and will become the first Collingwood player to reach the 350-game milestone.

“It’s funny because when you hit a milestone everyone’s already looking forward to the next one,” the Magpies champion said on Sportsday.

“I’ve had a few people that can’t get over to Adelaide for the game but they’re like, ‘Don’t worry, we’ll see you at your 400th’.

“I love playing the game, but also at the same time, I never want to be a bit of luggage for the club where they feel like they’re carrying me through just to try and get me to a number.

“I’ll play this game as long as I feel like I’m contributing and performing and if that takes me to 380 or 400 or 415, whatever that number may be, I just want to be a guy that’s relied upon, trusted, does my bit for the side and makes other people around him better.

“I’ve had a long career, a lot of ups and downs, but I’ve enjoyed the ride and I feel pretty fulfilled but I also feel like I’ve got a little bit of unfinished business.

“I want to get this group back into some exciting times in football and see where our story can take us this year and the year after.”

Collingwood will look to celebrate Pendlebury’s milestone match in style against the Crows at Adelaide Oval on Saturday.

The sixth-placed Magpies are gunning for an eighth straight win.
