The type of player the Suns will look to target in off-season

2022-07-15T12:00+10:00

Gold Coast coach Stuart Dew says the club will look to bolster its defence in the off-season.

With Lachie Weller and Connor Budarick both sidelined for first half of next year with ACL injuries, the Suns are eyeing skilful half-back flankers to fill the void.

Dew is happy with his midfield stocks and tall forward options looking ahead to 2023, but it’s down back where the Suns are keen to strengthen.

Gold Coast did some shrewd business last off-season, acquiring Mabior Chol from Richmond and former Carlton tall Levi Casboult as a delisted free agent.

“Down back we’re going to be a little bit skinny in the first half of next year obviously with Lachie Weller out, Connor Budarick out,” Dew told SEN Breakfast.

“That’s probably something we need to look at.

“Obviously ‘Kingy’ (Ben King) comes back in, so I feel like we’ve bolstered our tall stocks and we’ve got some depth through the midfield.

“Probably more your half-back types, particularly guys who can use the ball well.”

The Suns must beat Essendon at Marvel Stadium on Sunday to keep their finals hopes alive.

Dew’s side are a game and percentage outside the top eight with six games of the home and away season remaining.
