Logie winner Tony Armstrong impresses in country footy debut

2022-07-18T18:10+10:00

It would not be unusual for a football club to put out a Saturday morning call for help, be it for players, trainers or volunteers. However, rarely does a Saturday morning SOS include a request for the whereabouts of the ground's goal posts.

But that was the scenario that was faced by Sorrento FNC in the Mornington Peninsula FNL as they prepared for their home match with Bonbeach FNC.

Arriving at the ground on Saturday morning, club officials were faced with preparing for the home game, minus the posts. Messages were shared quickly via social media and the missing posts were found at the nearby skate park, about 880 metres away, at about 10.00 AM.

Whilst the recovery of the goal posts ensured the games got underway, Sorrento had used up all its luck for the day as, despite a last quarter charge, they went down to Bonbeach by seven points.

In the Colac and District FNL Alvie FNC celebrated their 100-year anniversary with a big 107-point win over Apollo Bay FNC. The Swans were founded in 1922 and initially competed in the Colac Junior Football Association before joining and competing in the Colac and District FNL since the 1937 season.

The win helps cement their spot atop the league ladder as the club looks to chase their first premiership since the 2000 season which would cap off their centenary celebrations nicely.

Staying down in the south east of the state, current Logie winner, ABC personality and former Adelaide, Sydney and Collingwood player Tony Armstrong made his debut for Barwon Heads FNC in the Bellarine FNL.

Armstrong was impressive in his return to competitive football, helping the Seagulls to a 67-point win over Newcomb Power FNC. Whilst on the topic of AFL players, congratulations to former Sale FNC’s Scott Pendlebury who played his 350th game for Collingwood on the weekend.

This takes him to 7th on the list of most VFL/AFL games played by players orignally from country Victorian clubs. Pendlbury sits way behind the overall leader on this list, Berwick FNC’s Michael Tuck’s 426 games.

Another current active player, Fremantle FNC’s David Mundy who is originally from Seymour FNC in the Goulburn Valley FNL sits on 369 games and former Sandhurst FNC player, Joel Selwood will make his way into the top 10 in the list the next few weeks when he also plays game number 350.

It’s great to see another team notch up win number one for the 2022 season, with that honour this week going to Crib Point FNC in Division 2 of the Mornington Peninsula Nepean FNL. Incredibly the win came via a goal after the siren to hand the Magpies a six-point win over 6th placed Pearcedale FNC.

At the other end of the spectrum, Melton FNC in the Ballarat FNC and Kerang FNC in the Central Murray FNL were among four first-time losers for season 2022 over the weekend.

It’s been on the cards for a few weeks, but we had not one, but two players notch up 100 goals for the season this weekend. First over the line was Brandyn Grenfell from Marong FNC in the Loddon Valley FNL who brought up the milestone by quarter time. Grenfell only needed four goals, but made sure of getting to the milestone and then some, by bagging 15 in his side's big win over Newbridge FNC. The haul of 15 was also the biggest bag of goals kicked for the weekend.

The second centurion was Bradley Congress from Bambill FNC in the Millewa FNL who started the weekend on 90, and managed to kick 11 to guide his side over the line against Nangiloc FNC.

Next in line to hit the 100-goal milestone looks like being another MIllewa FNL player, Gol Gol FNC’s Adam Thomson, who is currently sitting third on the overall list of goal kickers across the state with 96 goals so far for the 2022 season.
