Saints champion fears “another wasted year” for former club

2022-07-19T17:20+10:00

St Kilda champion Stephen Milne fears it could be another wasted year for the misfiring Saints.

After winning eight of their first 11 games to start the season, the Saints have lost five of six games since the mid-season bye.

Alarm bells are ringing at Moorabbin following Friday night’s dismal showing against the Western Bulldogs in what was a must-win match.

St Kilda laid just 11 tackles to half-time in their 28-point loss to the Bulldogs which further dented their finals hopes.

Milne, who kicked 574 goals in 275 games for the Saints, admits it’s tough to watch his former club at the moment.

“We’re up and down like a yo-yo, had such a great start,” Milne told SEN WA’s Gilly and Goss.

“I did go on Friday night … it was pretty tough to watch. There will be a few home truths told this week, I reckon.

“Richmond did us a favour, so there’s a bit of light at the end of the tunnel, but they have to get their skates on and start playing some good footy in the next few weeks or it could be another wasted year unfortunately.”

The 10th-placed Saints must beat lowly West Coast in Perth on Sunday to revive their faltering season.

They will have to do it without ruckman Paddy Ryder who could miss the rest of the home and away season with a calf strain.
