Crows midfielder “blacklisted” after contract call

2022-07-27T11:50+10:00

Matt Crouch’s time at Adelaide appears over.

According to Nine News Adelaide, the out-of-favour midfielder won’t be offered a new contract by the Crows after meeting with coach Matthew Nicks last week.

Crouch, an All-Australian and best and fairest winner in 2017, is reportedly “furious” with Adelaide’s decision.

The 27-year-old is contracted for 2023 meaning a trade would need to be orchestrated with another club if he were to depart West Lakes.

SEN SA Breakfast co-host Andrew Hayes says Crouch has been “blacklisted” from playing for the Crows, while Port Adelaide champion Kane Cornes isn’t expecting Adelaide to get too much in return in a potential trade for the prolific on-baller.

“He holds some of the power here that if he doesn’t want to be traded, he doesn’t have to be traded,” Cornes told SEN SA Breakfast.

“I assume that with him in the prime of his career and if there is another club, he’ll absolutely go.

“Adelaide, I guess, are planting the seeds for him that at the end of the year it’s not going to be as confronting for him when they put him up for trade.

“It is an awkward situation.

“Matt Crouch unfortunately has a media commitment as well with Channel Ten and you can see the anger in it.

“I don’t think he would quite understand what is going on because there are some other players running around in the midfield at Adelaide not doing any damage either.

“There will be a club at the end of the year that I think will have a look at him, but if you’re a Crows fan, you’re wondering what you’re going to get back – you’re going to get nothing, it’s going to be a pick in the 60s or 70s now they’re happy to get him off the books.

“He’s not going to be playing in the AFL side again. So we’ll wait and see and follow that one closely.”

Crouch has been dropped three times by Adelaide this season.

The contracted Crow has been racking up huge numbers in the SANFL, averaging 36.4 disposals across five appearances.

He has averaged 27.4 touches across 11 AFL games this year.
