AFLW Grand Final set for major shake-up with season shift

2022-08-01T17:25+10:00

The AFLW Grand Final is set to be played at Marvel Stadium for “a long, long time” into the future, per SEN’s Michelangelo Rucci.

Season seven of the AFLW will feature a new look, with the competition set to begin in August for the first time in its short history.

It will also feature 18 clubs with the introduction of four expansion teams.

However, as Rucci explains, it’s created the problem of where to host the Grand Final.

“We know that season seven will begin at the end of August, it will go all the way through September and October which puts the final series into November,” he began on SEN SA’s The Run Home.

“What we know about AFLW in the first six seasons, the highest ranked team among the two Grand Finallists has home field advantage or home state advantage.

“(The) problem for season seven was when you have the Grand Final at the end of November, you can’t get on Adelaide Oval because of cricket, nor the MCG, nor the SCG, nor the Gabba, nor Optus Stadium.

“I’m hearing on very good sources that the AFLW Grand Final will be locked into Marvel Stadium for a long, long time.

“If you can’t get access to (the other grounds), you’re going to be trapped (which is why the AFL have made this move).”

The league has an agreement with the MCG to see the venue host the AFL Grand Final through until 2059.

Adelaide triumphed in the season six Grand Final on April 9 in front of more than 15,000 fans at Adelaide Oval.

Season seven begins on August 25 when Carlton hosts Collingwood in a Thursday night blockbuster.
