Lions get their mojo back, but can they do it outside the Gabba?

2022-08-08T17:20+10:00

After kicking three goals to ten in the second half the week before, Brisbane needed to bounce back and prove it’s still in the premiership race.

Chris Fagan’s side did all that and more on Sunday. They exploded out of the blocks at the Gabba and weathered numerous storms throughout the game to run out convincing 33-point winners.

The Blues narrowed the margin to three goals in the second term and again late in the final quarter off the back of a massive push.

But the Lions responded with seven consecutive goals and three respectively, proving to themselves they can flip the momentum when needed.

All in all, the Lions dominated the game and the stats suggest the result was never in danger. 69 inside 50s to 46 saw Brisbane finish with eight more shots at goal, even if their forward line didn’t quite click with just 40 per cent efficiency inside 50, down from a season average of 49.8.

However, it showcases strings to the team’s bow, with the Lions still managing 114 points.

Sides that have been able to match Carlton on the inside have been able to win the game on the outside throughout 2022, and the Lions continued that.

Contested possessions were even, but then a win in clearances (48-37) and dominance in centre clearances (24-8) all but sealed the result.

The Lions had their mojo back on Sunday, but can they do it outside of the Gabba?
