Johns questions Parramatta's identity after another poor performance

2022-08-15T11:20+10:00

SEN’s Matty Johns has launched a scathing critique of the Parramatta Eels stating that the only consistent aspect of the team is their inconsistency.

After dismantling the Manly Sea Eagles the week prior, the Eels put it a horrid performance against the South Sydney Rabbitohs and failed to register a score in their 26-0 loss on Friday.

Johns said it was “impossible” to be a supporter of the club because you don’t know which Parramatta side will run out each week.

“They are consistent in their inconsistency,” Johns said on SEN 1170 Breakfast.

“When they play a great game, you know the next week that a stinker is coming.

“It’s impossible to follow.

“I expected a lot more and I think everyone did against the Bunnies.

“The Bunnies just played with them.”

Before Round 22, the Eels were the only side to have defeated the Penrith Panthers in addition to impressive wins against the Storm in Melbourne and the Sydney Roosters.

However, Brad Arthur's side have also suffered defeats to the last placed Wests Tigers as well as the lowly Bulldogs.

Johns said that this season has played out eerily similar to previous Eels campaigns in that they are a finals-calibre team yet lack the standards needed to make an impact deep into September.

“If you are serious about genuinely believing you can win this competition, then getting beaten second week of the finals isn’t a successful season,” he said.

“I just don’t know where they are as a club.

“When they start every year and say we can win the competition this year, do they really mean it?

“Here we are and we find Parramatta at the same place.”

The Eels host the Bulldogs on August 20 at CommBank Stadium in Round 23.
