Blackcaps struggle to fire in opening ODI against West Indies in Barbados

2022-08-18T12:42+10:00

The Blackcaps have suffered defeat to the West Indies in their opening ODI of the three-match series in Barbados.

In his first match short-format match since early 2020, Kane Williamson led his side out to bat on a rain-hit surface after losing the toss to Windies captain Nicholas Pooran.

Williamson top-scored for the Blackcaps with a knock of 34, but the tourists struggled to fire with the bat, managing just 190 runs at the crease.

Despite the rain delay, the home side came out with aggression, quickly piling on the runs to push victory ff the cards for Williamson’s men.

Windies batsman Shamarh Brooks was on fire with the bat, hitting 79 off 91 before being bowled by Blackcaps paceman Trent Boult with just 18 runs left to chase.

Boult and opening partner Tim Southee were the picks of the NZ bowlers, claiming 2-49 and 2-39 respectively across the innings.

The home side chased down the remaining runs with five wickets and 11 overs to spare, with Brooks crowned Man of the Match for his efforts.

The loss marks the Blackcaps’ first in 11 ODI outings, while it becomes the first win for the West Indies in their last 10 matches.

Down 1-0, the Blackcaps will head into their second match of the series on Saturday (6am NZST) where they will need to claim back-to-back victories to secure their first ODI series in the West Indies.
