The big stats and records to look out for in Round 23

2022-08-18T13:20+10:00

Fox Sports stats man Aaron Wallace has taken a closer look at this weekend’s clashes to give the fans an idea of what to expect over the next few days.

Wallace joined SEN 1170 Breakfast where he revealed some incredible stats and records that you need to be aware of in Round 23.

Penrith looking for Souths bounce back after being held to nil

Stats: Penrith scored nil last week while South Sydney held Parramatta to nil. Since 1980, teams that have scored nil and held a team to nil respectively have matched up just four times. Surprisingly, the team that scored nil the week prior has won three of those meetings.

“Penrith were held to nil by the Storm last week, they’ll want to bounce back quickly.

“Souths held the Eels to nil last week, and they need to keep winning to remain in the top four race.

“If you look at a team scoring nil playing a team that conceded nil the week before has only happened four times since 1980.

“The team that has scored nil the week before has won three of the four games, the last one was the Titans over the Roosters back in 2016.

“Maybe there’s some hope for the Panthers, they’ve won seven of their past eight against Souths too.”

Storm hoping to keep all-time record going against Broncos

Stats: Melbourne’s win-loss record over Brisbane since 2011 is the best of any in the NRL. The Storm have won 21 of the last 23 and 11-straight. The Broncos have only won three of their 19 home games ever against the Storm.

“Over the past dozen years, no team has a better record against any opponent than the Storm over Brisbane.

“Storm have won 21 of the last 23 and 11-straight by an average margin of 34-11.

“Playing at home doesn’t help Brisbane, they haven’t beaten the Storm at home since 2009 and three of 19 against the Storm at Suncorp.

“That’s their only losing record against any team at hope.

“You’d be tipping the Broncos with caution if you were thinking that way.”

Sharks chase top-two finish against bogey side Sea Eagles

Stats: Cronulla’s record at Brookvale is the worst of any team at any venue ever. The Sharks have lost seven in a row at the venue and less than 15 per cent of games there all time.

“The Sharks have a great shot at their first top-two finish since 1999.

“They have easily their worst record against Manly, they’ve won under 30 per cent of their matches against them all-time and less than 15 per cent at Brookvale.

“If you look at all-time teams playing 30 or more times at a venue, it’s the worst record of any team at any venue in history.

“They’ve lost seven in a row there and they’ve only played once there since 2016, that was a 28-16 loss in the 2019 finals series.

“Manly have some hope of still making finals, but even not losing by double-figures could be a minor victory.

“They’ve lost four-straight by double digits and they haven’t lost five-straight in double figures since 2003.”

Roosters hoping to continue domination over Tigers

Stats: Sydney’s record over the Wests Tigers since 2011 is the second best of any league-wide. They’ve won 19 of their last 21 against the Tigers and haven’t lost to them at home since 2009.

“The Roosters’ record over Wests Tigers is the second-best competition-wide since 2011.

“They’ve only lost twice in their last 21 games, and they haven’t lost a home game to Wests since 2009.

“A lot of them have been very big wins, they did win 40-6 last time they met, that was in Round 2 last season they haven’t played again since.

“The Roosters seem to be hitting form at the right end of the season, they’ve won five in a row and that’s the longest current win streak of any team.”
