VFL shoots down online controversy following Pies/Blues final

2022-08-29T07:06+10:00

The VFL has reportedly confirmed Carlton midfielder Will Setterfield was eligible to play in Sunday’s Elimination Final win over Collingwood, following online conjecture.

The Blues comfortably handled the Magpies at Victoria Park. Setterfield was best on ground with 40 disposals and two goals.

Pies fans took to social media post game to question whether he should have been allowed to play, given he suited up for Carlton’s AFL team 13 times and played only six VFL games.

However, as clarified by VFL reporter Brendan Rhodes, Setterfield’s status as an unused medical sub in one of those AFL games, cleared him to play.

“I was made aware of the Twitter storm around Will Setterfield and I did check it up with the rule makers,” Rhodes told SEN.

“As long as you’ve played six games in the VFL and no more than 12 games of AFL, then you’re eligible to play in the finals.

“As for Will Setterfield, the official figures are that he played six games in the VFL and 13 in the AFL, which is where the conjecture comes in, but of those 13 games, one was as an unused medi-sub which the VFL has ruled that it’s not an official game, which brings him back to 12 and means he’s okay to play.”

Carlton’s squad will now fly to Queensland to take on Brisbane in their Semi Final.
