Suns midfielder in sights of Collingwood

2022-09-09T06:54+10:00

Gold Coast’s Brayden Fiorini is in the sights of Collingwood, says Gerard Healy.

Reports emerged on Thursday that the Suns midfielder is of interest to the Magpies, who are believed to be looking to add depth to their midfield.

Fiorini, 25, is contracted with the Suns until the end of 2023.

Speaking on Sportsday, Healy confirmed there was some interest from the Pies in the former no.20 draft pick.

“Brayden Fiorini is in the sights of Collingwood,” Healy said.

“I’ve always thought Fiorini is a good player but he hasn’t anywhere near reached the heights that he should have from his draft pick.”

Having spent time in the VFL this year and playing 14 senior games, Fiorini could be seen as in a similar position to Will Brodie.

Brodie left Gold Coast last trade period and has been a revelation with Fremantle in 2022.

Sam McClure and Healy pondered if he could follow in Brodie’s footsteps by grabbing an opportunity at another club.

McClure said: “Does he have the ability to do a Will Brodie?”

Healy replied: “How would you know because nobody thought Will Brodie (could do that) except for Will Brodie.

“I think Will Brodie had great faith in himself. You talk to people at Fremantle and from the minute he turned up, he wanted more work, more of this.

“If you compare Will Brodie to the Suns midfield, if he’s not first picked, he’d be second picked.

“It’s a big loss for the Suns who haven’t been able to find a method to get him to play his best for them.”

Brodie has averaged 27 disposals, almost 6 clearances and 5 tackles per game for the Dockers in his debut season.

He joined Freo after 25 games over five seasons with the Suns.

Fiorini, who was drafted by the Suns in 2015, is in a similar position in that he has played 76 games across seven seasons.

The Melburnian could be seen by Collingwood as a cheaper option than Hawthorn’s Tom Mitchell.
