“This is what Geelong do”: Hawkins’ shock 2023 salary revealed

2022-09-09T10:40+10:00

Geelong’s ability to expertly manage their salary cap has long been marvelled at by rival clubs.

Having spent most of the last two decades near the top of the ladder, the Cats still often find themselves in positions to recruit highly-rated players despite having a bevy of stars already on the books.

Referencing their pursuit of GWS’ Jacob Hopper while finishing as clear minor premiers in 2022, The Age’s Sam McClure revealed how good their cap management is by divulging what superstar forward Tom Hawkins is set to earn next season.

While Hawkins was dominant in 2022 and was even named the All-Australian captain, McClure says he’ll earn less than league average in his 17th AFL season.

“I believe Tom Hawkins is on less than $300,000 next year,” McClure said on Sportsday.

“That’s what I’m told reliably.

“This is what Geelong do though, they promise you the best lifestyle away from footy.

“Tom Hawkins gets to live on his farm, he gets to basically keep his own hours.”

McClure says even at Hawkins’ peak, he only earned a relatively modest wage despite being worth top-dollar if he tested the open market.

“At his best, in the prime of his contract, it would’ve been $800k plus,” McClure said.

“But, if he was poached by a Carlton or Essendon in his prime, it would’ve been $1.1 (million).

“This is why Geelong are what they are.

“I’m willing to stand by that (figure Hawkins is on for 2023).”

The average player salary for 2022 was $372,224.

Hawkins will earn a chance to play in his fourth Grand Final if the Cats beat either the Demons or Lions in next weekend’s Preliminary Final.
