“The body feels pretty good”: Hannebery refuses to rule out AFL return

2022-09-11T12:50+10:00

Dan Hannebery has refused to rule out playing at AFL level in 2023 despite announcing his retirement last month.

The 31-year-old's farewell game was St Kilda’s Round 23 loss to Sydney, but he may add to that if he chooses to play on.

While it looked as if Hannebery’s time as an AFL player was up, journalist Damian Barrett said there will be “some interest” in his services as a player for next season.

Joining Nine’s Sunday Footy Show, Hannebery was asked by Barrett if he sees himself on an AFL list in 2023.

“To be honest, I’m not too sure,” Hannebery replied.

“It’s been a tough four years, both mentally and physically.

“We put a lot of work in, but I felt we got it right at the end there.

“I haven’t really spoken too much to my manager about it or thought too much about it.”

While Hannebery says he’s enjoying retirement, he says his body feels “pretty good” after an injury-plagued run at Moorabbin.

“I’m enjoying retirement, albeit for three weeks but we’ll see how we go,” Hannebery said.

“I’m trying not to blow out too much.

“I’ve been for a few runs so far and I feel okay.

“I’d have to think about it, but at this stage, the body feels pretty good.

“Diplomatically, I’ll say that I’m retired for the moment.”

Hannebery managed just 17 games for the Saints across his four years at the club but proved that he was still up to the level in 2022 when fit.

From three games last season, Hannebery averaged 22.7 disposals and five clearances per outing.
