Essendon looking at delisted Hawthorn wingman to “increase running depth”

2022-09-15T09:02+10:00

Essendon are reportedly offering a career lifeline to delisted Hawthorn wingman Tom Phillips.

Phillips, 26, played just four games for the Hawks in 2022 in his second season at the club.

Having proven himself as a quality outside runner playing 89 games for Collingwood from 2016 to 2020, AFL Media’s Cal Twomey says Essendon are thinking about giving Phillips another chance at AFL level to help bolster their wing stocks.

“The Bombers are looking for some running depth to add to their midfield squad,” Twomey said on SEN Breakfast.

“They’ve unearthed Nic Martin and Sam Durham as well as wingman, but they are a bit light-on in that area and are keen to increase their running power.

“Tom Phillips could be an option there, he’s recently delisted by the Hawks and was obviously a part of that Collingwood trade period in 2020.

“He’s desperate to play on at a third club, he’s still just 26 and has 115 games or so under his belt.”

Twomey says Essendon will be able to easily add Phillips to their list given his status as a delisted free agent.

“He could be one clubs can get as a delisted free agent as well in that window, that’s what makes these guys appealing,” Twomey said.

“You don’t have to go through the process to trade, negotiate, or anything like that.

“If something fits, you can just make it happen.”

The delisted free agency period commences on Thursday, November 3 and concludes on Friday, November 11.
