Report: James Hird puts hand up to coach Essendon in 2023

2022-09-14T17:30+10:00

James Hird has reportedly put his hand up for the vacant Essendon coaching role.

According to The Herald Sun’s Mark Robinson, Hird was believed to have been interviewed by the club’s selection committee on Wednesday.

Robinson says Hird’s decision came after several weeks of discussions with his family about returning to the job he resigned from in 2015.

Hird coached the club in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2015 and was famously suspended in 2014 following the Bombers’ supplements saga.

Following a significant break from coaching, the Essendon great joined the GWS coaching staff in a part-time assistant coach role under former teammate and Giants interim coach Mark McVeigh.

Hird played 253 games for the Bombers from 1992 to 2007 where he captained the club to the 2000 premiership as well as winning a Norm Smith Medal, Brownlow Medal, five All-Australians and five Crichton Medals.
