Sloan to “request a formal release” from Dragons as Dolphins circle young gun

St George Illawarra Dragons youngster Tyrell Sloan is expected to request a release from his contract by the end of this week.

The 20-year-old is one of a few rising stars at the Dragons but has struggled to get consistent game time under coach Anthony Griffin as Sloan only added eight games to his tally.

The Daily Telegraph’s David Riccio revealed that Sloan and his management are growing increasingly frustrated with Griffin and the Dragons and wants out of the club despite having two years left to run on his contract.

“It’s concerning for St George Illawarra fans that it’s got to this point,” Riccio said on SEN 1170 Breakfast.

“It’s no shock because we saw Sloan virtually sidelined this year.

“We saw him appear at the back end of the season playing off the bench (and) it was almost as though head coach Anthony Griffin was trying to keep Sloan happy.

“Sloan will request a formal release from St George Illawarra this week.

“He has two years remaining on his contract and he re-signed in January.”

Sloan’s desire to move on from the Dragons is reportedly all to do with Griffin’s poor management of the young gun.

Riccio said that Sloan is attracting heavy interest from Wayne Bennett and the Dolphins.

“Sloan wants to play under a coach he believes he can benefit from,” he said.

“The Dolphins have emerged under Wayne Bennett as the primary target.

“The Dolphins already have Jamayne Isaako contracted as a fullback.

“If Sloan was to go there, he would compete with Isaako for that fullback spot.”

Sloan has played only 13 games with Dragons since debuting in 2021 and has largely played in the NSW Cup in 2022.
