The 4 certainties for the AFL Grand Final

2022-09-23T10:30+10:00

Labelling something a ‘certainty’ in any sport is fraught with danger.

But we’ll attempt to find some anyway.

Here is what we consider certainties for Saturday's Grand Final between Geelong and Sydney.

Duncan most disposals for Geelong

With Patrick Dangerfield likely to be clamped by Callum Mills, the door has been opened for Mitch Duncan to lead the way.

Dangerfield was mighty in the Preliminary Final, kicking two early goals and leading the way with 28 disposals.

However, Mills did the job on Jordan De Goey in the Prelim and greatly limited his influence. The Geelong veteran may not be clamped as easily, but it opens the door for Duncan to top the leaderboard.

Expect Duncan to cover the ground, play his role and find plenty of the footy through the midfield and across the flanks.

Brad Close to kick two or more goals

Brad Close has not received the plaudits he deserves so far this season.

The small forward has broken out as a goal kicker and an influential runner who can cover the ground and set up others.

He kicked four in their Round 2 encounter with Sydney, and 24.20 for the season in totality.

Expect Close to hit the scoreboard and do some damage to the Swans.

Luke Parker to have 20 or more disposals

Luke Parker is such a star, he’s made for finals footy and he’s made for grand finals.

Am expecting Tom Hickey to dominate Rhys Stanley and Mark Blicavs in the ruck and therefore give first use to his fellow midfielders.

Parker has had a terrific year, averaging 24.5 disposals, 11.8 contested possessions, 6.1 clearances and 6 score involvements, huge numbers for the Swans veteran.

Expecting him to run head-to-head with either Patrick Dangerfield or Cam Guthrie, meaning he’ll be around the pill and such is his ability to win the ball, he’ll find it 20 or more times with ease.

Isaac Heeney to kick two or more goals

Isaac Heeney is Sydney’s x-factor.

Struggling to find an obvious match-up for the blonde bull and if the Swans are to take it up to the Cats, Heeney will need to put a few through the big sticks.

Heeney has teased us in the first two finals, kicking a goal in both games but has left you feeling like he should’ve kicked two or three.

He’s a star and am expecting him to star on the biggest stage.
