How a Clarkson Zoom call got Logue “over the line” for North Melbourne

2022-09-26T13:50+10:00

AFL player manager Colin Young expects his client Griffin Logue to be traded from Fremantle to North Melbourne this off-season.

While Young is yet to engage talks between the Kangaroos and Dockers, he feels Logue’s uncontracted status means he’ll be able to head to his club of choice at Arden Street.

“I haven’t spoken to Freo or Brady (Rawlings, North Melbourne GM of football talent) about what expectations for either club are,” Young said on AFL Trade Radio.

“I intend to catch up with Brady this afternoon and I’ll give Dave (Wallis, Fremantle recruiting boss) a call this afternoon to see when they’re catching up to have a chat, we usually feed off that.

“You imagine it would get done, he’s obviously out of contract … I’d expect that to get done.”

Logue was a top 10 pick in the 2016 National Draft and was highly sought after once the Dockers delayed offering the defender a contract extension.

Young revealed that North Melbourne won the race for the 24-year-old after incoming coach Alastair Clarkson sold the Docker his vision.

“Basically, at the end of the day, Clarko got him over the line,” Young explained.

“He did have a chat to North Melbourne through the processes, and we felt at the time where Freo were going with Jackson that he had a chat with quite a few clubs.

“North Melbourne didn’t have a coach, and then all of the sudden Clarko got gig, he made the call on Zoom, and it was basically all over after that.”

Having been shifted around throughout his 64 games in purple, Young says Clarkson pitched a permanent role to Logue and expressed that he felt he could work similar wonders with him as he did with a three-time All-Australian Hawk.

“Sitting in the goal square, down back,” Young said in regards to the role Clarkson pitched.

“Clarko was pretty good, he sort of positioned himself saying, ‘I worked with Gibson from North to the Hawks’, and I think he was a three-time All-Australian.

“So, I think that conversation about how he worked with Gibson getting to All-Australian form and he could do that with Griff playing down back.

“It was a pretty good springboard for him, so I think that conversation went pretty well.”

While Logue is destined to depart the Dockers in the coming weeks, Young says that wasn’t the original plan as they felt he’d remain in WA until some “red flags” appeared.

“We had no thought process as to at the start of this season that he would be traded,” Young said.

“In fact, both him and Blake (Acres) booked trips to go to America next week, the day of trade basically so we at no stage thought he was (going to be traded).

“Around Round 10, Round 11, Fremantle - and respectively so - can offer a contract when they want to, hadn’t offered a contract.

“Then I think he got dropped a couple of times … there was a couple of red flags … I think that started the ball rolling.”

Young also confirmed that Logue had a “chat” with Sydney figures but ultimately decided on North Melbourne due to the postcode and his wish to move to Melbourne.

“He would’ve had nine conversations, and probably about two or three meetings and four Zooms,” Young said.

“We had a chat (with Sydney) if there was a possibility going forward … but it was more about the postcode at the end of the day.”

While Young isn’t sure exactly what would get the deal done between both clubs, he pondered whether the Dockers could pair Logue with his wantaway teammate Darcy Tucker, who has also requested a move to the Kangaroos.

“I’m hearing that Darcy Tucker has nominated North Melbourne as well,” Young said.

“Do North Melbourne mirror both Darcy and Griffin up and do that? So, I’ll probably know more by midweek, and I’ll work with both parties to hopefully get a good result.”

According to reports, the Kangaroos have tabled Logue a five-year deal.
