Brisbane’s budget: Adding grunt and young class to star-studded midfield

2022-09-27T16:55+10:00

Every club has a wishlist but every club also has a budget.

But not many out there know exactly what is on said list or exactly what each club has up their sleeve to spend.

Josh Jenkins has given each of the 18 clubs a round $1 million figure to spend THIS trade period on a player or players they require.

This is a hypothetical look at what a club needs, but ensuring the players in question are somewhat gettable and the deals are not fanciful.

It is what Jenkins thinks is needed and how the clubs in question should spend their $1m.

Following his Adelaide wishlist, Jenkins has taken a look at this year’s Preliminary Finalists, the Brisbane Lions.

Brisbane’s budget – Stoppage grunt and young class

Jenkins believes the Lions should spend their cash on bolstering their midfield.

“I saw them get beaten up around the ball at different stages,” he said on AFL Trade Radio’s Trade Mornings.

“I did a game on a Thursday night against the Dees where they got blown away, they just got beaten up around the ball.

“A big body like (Josh) Dunkley is exactly what they need, it’s an astute pick because Lachie Neale’s not very big, Jarryd Lyons isn’t very big and his groins are wavering.

“(Hugh) McCluggage I think is better on the outside going inside, not spending all his time inside, (Jarrod) Berry has shown something in the finals that he can be a run-with mid and he’s a good size, but they need a big body.

“Look at all the dominant sides and the size of their midfielders, Dunkley can be that clearance extractor.

“Whatever (Will) Ashcroft is, the beauty of Ashcroft is from a financial point of view he’s going to cost nothing, so straight away they bolster their midfield.

“That’s what they need because their forward line is talented, the backline is solid.

“They need to get deeper in the midfield.”
