The “staggering” figure behind Adelaide’s front-ended Rankine offer

Adelaide is set to have a relatively quiet off-season once Izak Rankine joins the club from Gold Coast.

The 22-year-old requested a move to the Crows earlier this month, and SEN SA The Run Home duo Michelangelo Rucci and Kym Dillon expect the small forward to be the only arrival at West Lakes this off-season.

While the Crows are hoping to revamp their list, Rucci and Dillon believe that the figure Rankine will earn in his first season at the club means they won’t have space in their cap to attract other targets.

Dillon: “I don’t think there’s going to be much action coming with Adelaide at all, I think there’s a bigger picture here.”

Rucci: “The word we keep hearing is they’re going to front-end Izak Rankine’s contract, which takes up a fair bit of the salary cap in year one.”

Dillon: “They’re going to pay massive in the first year.”

Rucci: “The word is $1.5 million in the first year.”

Dillon: “Which is staggering, and that’s why there can’t be any other player movement.”

Rucci: “Then they have salary cap space for a big get next year.”

Dillon: “Jason Horne-Francis? I’m hearing there’s not going to be anything apart from Izak Rankine (this off-season).”

The Crows have reportedly tabled Rankine a five-year deal worth more than $800,000 a season on average.

Rankine has played 48 games and kicked 57 goals since being taken with pick No. 3 in the 2018 National Draft.
