Collingwood’s budget: Abandon McStay pursuit to top up and sign young gun

2022-09-28T10:39+10:00

Every club has a wishlist but every club also has a budget.

But not many out there know exactly what is on said list or exactly what each club has up their sleeve to spend.

Josh Jenkins has given each of the 18 clubs a round $1 million figure to spend THIS trade period on a player or players they require.

This is a hypothetical look at what a club needs, but ensuring the players in question are somewhat gettable and the deals are not fanciful.

It is what Jenkins thinks is needed and how the clubs in question should spend their $1m.

Following his Carlton wishlist, Jenkins has taken a look at their archrivals, the Collingwood Magpies.

Collingwood’s budget – Turn back on McStay, top up and keep young forward

Jenkins believes the Magpies should abandon their Daniel McStay pursuit and top up with shrewd options.

“We’ve heard all year, Daniel McStay is an absolute lock,” he said on AFL Trade Radio’s Trade Mornings.

“But I’m turning my back on McStay for the budget, I am running Collingwood for the moment.

“I’m topping up, I’m going for (Bobby) Hill on Collingwood’s terms, he can’t be on more than $350k.

“(Billy) Frampton, I’m okay with that, I think that’s a decent option, you can’t expect that much from him, he’s had his move from Port to Adelaide as a forward/ruck.

“If he is to fill the (Jordan) Roughead role, then there’s a potential for him to do that, I think he’s a bargain basement guy, so he’s $200-250k.

“I think you spend the rest to keep Ollie Henry, a lot of the narrative has been financial issues between Henry and Collingwood.

“Find a way to keep him, and find the money to keep him, spend $1 million on those three.

“This is where I want to talk about their forward line, so I’m leaving McStay out.

“I love the idea of the mix of Ollie Henry, a dynamic third-tall marking forward, I love the workhorse that is (Brody) Mihocek.

“Nathan Kreuger, who I know well from my time at Geelong, is one of the most dynamic athletes I’ve ever seen and he showed glimpses, he needs to stay healthy, he spends too much time with the trainers.

“Ash Johnson jumped out of the ground as well, I love that mix, throw Bobby Hill, throw (Jack) Ginnivan, throw (Jamie) Elliott in, I love that mix.

“You pick seven forwards every week, pick seven of that group, I love the sound of that group.

“It’s dynamic, it fits the way Collingwood and Craig McRae want to play.”
