North Melbourne is expected to use the first of their two picks from the AFL’s assistance package to acquire Fremantle’s Griffin Logue.
The Dockers defender is one of several players to request a trade away from the club, with the Kangaroos the destination of choice.
With North Melbourne receiving a 2023 second round pick and a 2023 third rounder from the AFL as part of their special assistance compensation, AFL Media’s Cal Twomey is expecting the club to use the first of these to get the deal done.
“Griffin Logue, North Melbourne is prepared to table a future second-round draft pick for him,” he said on AFL Trade Radio’s Trade Exchange.
“The (assistance package picks are) back-to-back, next to each other anyway.”
Due to the conditions attached to these picks, the Kangaroos are heavily incentivised to trade them this year, otherwise they would cease to exist.
“It would have to be (the assistance package pick traded), in the sense they have to trade the assistance package picks this year before they get into the draft next year,” he said.
“They can’t keep them for the draft next year or keep hold or stockpile them.”
Considering that Twomey believes North Melbourne would prefer to keep this pre-season pick, he expects a deal with the assistance pick to be done sooner rather than later.
“You’d be wanting to offload that (assistance package pick) first and see if you can keep your own for something else,” he said.
“They’re prepared to do that for Griffin Logue and look, he’s out of contract.
“Getting a deal would be the best interests of everyone, and a five-year offer there for the Roos.”
Logue averaged 12.6 disposals through 20 games for the Dockers this season.
North Melbourne has also been linked with St Kilda pair Hunter Clark and Brad Hill, as well as fellow Docker Darcy Tucker.
