Hawks confirm veteran’s decision to join Lions as free agent

2022-09-28T17:30+10:00

UPDATE

Hawthorn has confirmed that Jack Gunston will join Brisbane as a free agent this off-season.

Hawks head of football Rob McCartney says the three-time premiership winner informed the club of his decision on Wednesday after 211 games for the club.

“We were always in open discussion with Jack and his management about his current position here at the club and what his future might look like,” McCartney said via a statement.

“Today Jack informed us, after considerable thought, that he would exercise his right as a free agent to explore the market, and we respect that completely.

“Jack has been an incredible servant during his 11 seasons here at Hawthorn. He leaves the club as a three-time premiership player and a best and fairest winner, but more importantly, a person who is genuinely respected and loved by his teammates, staff and our Hawthorn fans.

“The Gunston family will always be part of the Hawthorn fabric and we thank them for contribution they have made to the brown and gold.”

Gunston leaves the Hawks as a Peter Crimmins Medallist and three-time club leading goalkicker.

EARLIER

Jack Gunston has informed Hawthorn of his decision to join Brisbane as a free agent according to The Age’s Michael Gleeson.

Gunston, a triple-premiership player in brown and gold, has had a two-year deal on the table to remain a Hawk but will head north as an unrestricted free agent this off-season.

The forward has kicked 430 goals from 225 games and proved he still has what it takes at the top level with 32 majors from 16 appearances in 2022.

Gunston turns 31 next month and joins the likes of ex-Hawks Luke Hodge and Grant Birchall who also finished their careers at the Gabba.

With Karl Amon arriving at Waverley Park as a free agent, it’s unlikely Hawthorn will receive any free agency compensation for the loss of Gunston.
