Rivals circling uncontracted Brisbane small forward

2022-09-29T07:00+10:00

Gold Coast are keen on luring Brisbane small forward Tom Berry down the Pacific Motorway, according to AFL Media’s Callum Twomey.

Berry, 22, has played 20 games for the Lions since making his debut in 2020 but has struggled to nail down a senior spot with Brisbane possessing one of the competition’s deepest forward lines.

After breaking through for just three AFL games in 2022, Twomey says the Suns are “definitely” interested in Berry’s services.

“He’s a different player to (older brother) Jarrod if you haven’t seen him play too much,” Twomey said on AFL Trade Radio.

“He’s played 20 games in three years at the club, he’s 22, but only played three games this year.

“He’s a small forward, really quick, a tackling player and one of the best characters I’ve met coming through the draft, a much-loved player of the Brisbane line-up.

“He just hasn’t been able to break into that forward group, they’ve got some pretty good small forwards, don’t they? Charlie Cameron, Lincoln McCarthy and Zac Bailey, so he’s only been in there for bits and pieces.

“But the Suns definitely have an interest in him.”

With the Suns set to lose Izak Rankine to Adelaide, Twomey understands why they’re targeting a small forward that can offer “ferocious” pressure.

“They’ll lose Izak Rankine, who is a very different player to what Tom Berry is,” Twomey said.

“But, in terms of the ferocious, sort of tackling pressure, that’s sort of the reason to have a look at him.

“He’s uncontracted … he’s received an offer from Brisbane to stay of course where his brother is one of their key players.

“But Tom is on the radar of the Suns.”

Berry kicked eight goals and averaged 25.1 disposals in the VFL from 10 games at the level in 2022.
