The 12 players who the grass may be greener for at a new AFL club in 2023

2022-09-29T08:23+10:00

They say the grass is always greener on the other side and Matthew Lloyd and Sam Edmund have named a number of players around the AFL who would benefit from a fresh start.

Some may still be in contract, but have been (or will be) squeezed out of their respective line-ups.

See Lloyd and Edmund’s players who should consider requesting a trade below:

Jack Graham (Richmond)

“I think he’s realised it’s a pretty brutal business, this. In comes Jacob Hopper, in comes Tim Taranto, the grass is greener, he’s got to go I think,” Lloyd told AFL Trade Radio.

“You’ve got Dion Prestia, even Jack Ross … Trent Cotchin plays ahead of him this year, I don’t think he plays VFL this year.

“The battle for him is with Shai Bolton, Dustin Martin didn’t play a lot of footy this year – it’s a tough midfield to break into.

“Whereas Port Adelaide misses out on Josh Dunkley … (Graham’s) got a two-year deal, they’ll probably give him another two years on top of that and he can really set himself.

“If he wants to go home to his family, I think it’s a good move to go.”

Sam Weideman (Melbourne)

“He’s got to go,” Lloyd said.

“I’ve seen Mitch Brown play ahead of him and if Mitch Brown is playing ahead of you, it’s not saying a lot for the confidence.

“He’s got a lot of work to do. He’s got to get tougher, he’s got to get harder, he’s got to find ways to win the ball more because if he doesn’t mark it, what else does he offer?

“He’s got to be better at ground level, he’s got to be better with his pressure, so there are a lot of things he needs to improve on, but I think at Melbourne he’s been there long enough to know.

“I know you can turn it around there, but I’d move on. I would look to be more aggressive with them and my management and say ‘I want a fresh start’.”

Paddy Dow (Carlton)

“The club has said (to Paddy Dow) ‘maybe we’ll explore a trade’ and he’s said ‘no, I want to fight for it at Carlton’,” Lloyd said.

Jason Castagna (Richmond)

“He’s one that could potentially say ‘where am I at? I’ve been bypassed by Maurice Rioli, Noah Cumberland,” Lloyd said.

Matt Crouch (Adelaide)

“I fear for him that he’s going to rot away at the Adelaide Crows unless someone is willing to take him, but he’s probably not the type of player someone would jump at,” Lloyd said.

Alex Sexton (Gold Coast)

“Another one who I reckon could be really good for a club is Alex Sexton,” Lloyd said.

“He’s kicked five in the last game against North. I don’t think he’s ever been disciplined enough, he never handballs, he ducks out the back, but put him in an environment around strong senior players.

“The Suns haven’t had any success, you try and get away with things, you become selfish when you’re not having team success – I just think if you get him in the environment of a top club and he could be pretty dangerous.”

Sam Hayes (Port Adelaide)

“He’s been around a few years and is yet to breakthrough for a game.”

Esava Ratugolea (Geelong)

“I’ve got a name for you – Esava Ratugolea,” Edmund said.

“I know he’s said he wants to stay and fight for his spot and he’s got a year to run on his contract, could he go somewhere else and reinvent himself as a key back? He’s shown some exciting signs in limited opportunities at Geelong.

“I know the coach is a big fan, but if you’re Esava and you want to play every week, you’re going aren’t you?”

Edmund’s other ‘grass is greener’ options

Quinton Narkle’s been delisted and has been looking around.

Hayden Crozier at the Dogs is an interesting one, he was a regular in that side and has fallen right out of favour this year, so he’s looking around for a new deal.

Lloyd Meek is part of the ruck merry-go-round and obviously with Luke Jackson coming in, he has to move.

Toby Bedford is the other one I’ve scribbled down here.”
