Geelong’s budget: Continue down Bowes and pick 7 path

2022-09-29T10:07+10:00

Every club has a wishlist but every club also has a budget.

But not many out there know exactly what is on said list or exactly what each club has up their sleeve to spend.

Josh Jenkins has given each of the 18 clubs a round $1 million figure to spend THIS trade period on a player or players they require.

This is a hypothetical look at what a club needs, but ensuring the players in question are somewhat gettable and the deals are not fanciful.

It is what Jenkins thinks is needed and how the clubs in question should spend their $1m.

Due to Jenkins’ role at Geelong, Cam Luke has stepped in to run the rule over the 2022 premiers.

Geelong’s budget – Pay the money to secure Bowes and pick 7

“I would continue down the Jack Bowes path, even though his contract is reportedly $850,000 next year,” he said on AFL Trade Radio’s Trade Mornings.

“I’m chasing both (the player and pick 7) because I think Jack Bowes is a solid footballer who at Geelong - and don’t get me wrong, he may not be in their best 22 come Round 1 - but he’s also a player on the periphery and a player you need to have the excellence week in, week out.

“He’s a little bit younger with the older list demographic at Geelong. You then get pick 7 which you’re able to work with. That’s the juicy part of this.

“They’re obviously extremely smart with their finances and the culture that has been built down there.

“I’m having a real crack at Jack Bowes. That’s what really good football clubs, list management and culture does, it gives a really good opportunity to a really solid footballer.

“We forget he’s played some good footy at the Suns. You have to bite off a little bit with the cash but you’re paying that to get pick 7 into your club.”
