The “last clip” Ross Lyon gave former Docker during retirement decision

Former Fremantle defender Garrick Ibbotson recalled the cheeky dig Ross Lyon took at him as he announced his intentions to retire.

Ibbotson spent 10 years at the Dockers between 2007 and 2017, racking up 177 games for the club before calling time on his career.

However, the defender says Lyon didn’t give him the nicest send-off.

“I played the first half of the season and towards the back half I was having some issues, my hip was starting to get worse, I was out of contract at the end of that season,” Ibbotson told SEN WA Breakfast.

“I was like, ‘I’m probably going to have enough, I can’t really play anyway’. I went in there and spoke to Ross.

“I sort of said to him that I was going to be pulling the pin at the end of the season, that took about 15 or 20 minutes.

“I said, ‘Oh look I’m going to be sort of done’ and he said, ‘Mate that’s great that you can take control of your own career and your own destiny, move on to what you wanted to do.’

“Then he said, ‘You probably weren’t in our plans for next year anyway’.

“I got my own way and then at the end, I got my last clip before I went out the door.

“(Retirement) was on my terms, but if I hadn’t have done it quick enough, it wouldn’t have been on my terms.

“I don’t know if he was trying to make me feel good about making the decision myself or whether he was trying to clip me one more time.”

This is not the only story Ibbotson has told about his time playing under Ross Lyon, also recalling the time he was benched for over a month due to a practice match mistake.
