De Goey's manager speaks on contract clauses and “massive” decision to re-sign with Collingwood

2022-09-30T12:35+10:00

Jordan De Goey’s manager Ryan Vague insisted his client not be held to higher standards than any other player as a result of his off-field history in recent years.

De Goey signed a fresh five-year contract extension at Collingwood on Friday, with some level of behavioural clauses inserted for the first two years of the new deal.

The re-signing brings to an end the long-running saga, which saw De Goey and his management reject a contract earlier this week before putting pen to paper ahead of the club’s best and fairest dinner on Friday night.

Vague said De Goey would continue to be held to account for his off-field behaviour, in line with any other football in the competition.

“The biggest thing for Jordan (De Goey) and what we conveyed to the club is we weren’t going to have Jordan held to any standards above what is expected of any other player,” he said on AFL Trade Radio’s Trade Exchange.

“The AFLPA were strong on that this week and so were we, we weren’t here to set a precedent moving forward that could expose players to more (clauses) and the club were very respectful to that.

“Jordan is still bound by the standards expected of an AFL player.”

Vague said De Goey made the decision late on Thursday night after speaking to family and friends, saying his client slept “very well” after reaching the decision.

“This was a massive decision,” he said.

“I even gave him the option of sleeping on it, we had some advancements yesterday with the footy club and Jordan went away from that meeting and had a chat with his parents and a couple of close mates that he confides in.

“He probably reached his decision late (on Thursday night) and told me he wanted to remain a Pie for five more years.

“I think he slept very well after that.”
